Who Needs a Master Key System?
Office Buildings
Employees access their offices, managers access departments, building owner accesses everything.
Apartment Complexes
Tenants have individual keys, maintenance has sub-master access, property managers have the grand master.
Medical Facilities
Restrict access to medication rooms, records, and exam rooms while allowing appropriate staff access.
Schools & Universities
Teachers access classrooms, custodians access all rooms, administration has full building access.
Hotels & Hospitality
Guests get room keys, housekeeping gets floor access, management gets full access.
Warehouses
Workers access their zones, supervisors access multiple areas, managers control the entire facility.
Understanding Master Key Hierarchy Levels
A master key system creates a structured hierarchy that controls who can open which doors. The most common setup for Dallas office buildings and apartment complexes uses three levels:
- Change Key (CK): Opens one specific lock only. Given to individual tenants or employees.
- Master Key (MK): Opens all locks within a defined group — for example, all units on Floor 3, or all offices in the accounting department.
- Grand Master Key (GMK): Opens every lock in the entire building or facility. Held by property managers or executive leadership only.
Some large facilities — universities, hospital campuses, multi-building complexes — add a fourth level called the Great Grand Master Key. Each level is engineered into the physical pin configuration of the lock cylinders. Gaining access to one level does not compromise other levels, and restricted keyways prevent unauthorized key duplication at any hardware store.
Our site assessment determines the right number of levels for your building's layout and security needs before we order a single cylinder.
Master Key System Cost in Dallas
Master key system pricing depends on the number of locks, the number of hierarchy levels, and the security grade of cylinders you choose. Here are realistic ranges for Dallas businesses:
- Small office (5–15 doors): $450–$900 installed
- Medium building (15–40 doors): $900–$2,200 installed
- Large complex (40+ doors): Custom quote — typically $55–$85 per door installed
- Restricted keyways (duplication-protected): Add $15–$25 per cylinder
- Rekeying existing locks into a new system: $35–$55 per lock (if hardware is compatible)
The 1–3 day turnaround quoted on this site applies to standard commercial projects. Custom key blanks for high-security restricted keyways may require an additional 2–3 business days for manufacturing.

Master Key System vs Access Control: Which Is Right for You?
Dallas businesses often ask whether to invest in a mechanical master key system or an electronic access control system. The answer depends on your specific situation:
Choose a master key system when:
- Your building has 10–50 doors and standard traffic patterns
- You want a reliable, power-independent solution with no monthly software fees
- Your team is not highly tech-savvy
- You're managing a rental property or small office building
- Budget is a primary consideration
Choose access control when:
- You need a real-time audit trail of who entered which door and when
- You want the ability to revoke access instantly without rekeying
- You have high staff turnover or contractors with temporary access needs
- You're managing a medical, legal, or financial office with compliance requirements
- Multiple locations need centralized management
Many Dallas businesses use both: mechanical master keys for emergency and maintenance access, electronic access control for primary entry points and sensitive areas. Local Emergency Locksmith installs and integrates both systems.
